Authentic Seattle Hot Dog

Cream cheese on a hot dog?  Sounds a little odd, but it’s a local Seattle favorite.

Seattle Street Dogs

  • 2 medium yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Kosher salt
  • pepper
  • 6 all beef hot dogs
  • 6 hot dog buns
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • Spicy brown mustard
  • Sauerkraut (optional)
  1. In a cast iron skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat and add the onions.  Stir the onions about every 5 minutes for 45 minutes, until they are wilted and dark brown, nicely carmelized.

In microwave bowl or small saucepan, warm cream cheese, then stir until smooth.

  2. Grill hot dogs until done.

  3. Lightly toast buns, then smear cream cheese inside bun.

  4. Put hot dog in bun, add onions, sauerkraut, and top with spicy brown mustard.
